AI Resolution Board Builder
AI-Powered Board Generation for Personal Productivity
To kick off the New Year, the Trello team explored how AI could help people move beyond vague resolutions and turn intentions into clear, actionable plans. The result was Trello’s first AI board-builder experience: the New Year’s Resolution Board Builder.
This experience allows users to describe a goal—and why it matters to them—and instantly generates a structured Trello board designed to support real progress over time.
I worked on the concept, design, and execution of this feature from idea to launch, including a short product video to showcase the experience.
The Problem
Every January, people set ambitious goals—but most struggle to translate them into systems they can actually follow.
Through research and prior work in personal productivity, we knew:
People often know what they want to achieve, but not how to structure it.
Blank boards can feel intimidating, especially for new or casual Trello users.
Motivation fades quickly without clear milestones, habits, and reflection loops.
We saw an opportunity to use AI not as a novelty, but as a scaffolding tool—helping users start strong with a thoughtfully structured plan.
The Idea
Tell Trello your goal and why it matters.
Trello takes that input and instantly generates a complete board that includes:
A clear vision
Key milestones
Supporting habits
Space for reflection and progress tracking
Instead of starting from an empty board, users begin with a system that feels intentional, personal, and immediately usable.
The Challenge
This project had an aggressive timeline:
less than three weeks from concept to launch.
Key constraints:
This was Trello’s first generative AI board experience
The feature needed to feel simple, trustworthy, and aligned with Trello’s core philosophy
It had to work for a wide range of goals, from fitness to learning to personal organization
The experience needed to be fast, delightful, and low-friction
Balancing speed, quality, and clarity was critical.
My Role
Shaping the product concept and user flow
Defining how AI input and output should feel approachable and human
Designing the generated board structure (vision, milestones, habits, reflection)
Collaborating closely with engineering to ensure feasibility within the timeline
Creating a short product video to communicate the experience clearly and succinctly
Outcome
The New Year’s Resolution Board Builder launched successfully as Trello’s first AI-powered board generation feature.
Results and signals:
Strong positive sentiment from users trying the experience
Clear excitement around “starting with structure” instead of a blank board
Validation that AI can meaningfully reduce friction without removing user agency
Early proof that generative experiences can feel native, useful, and on-brand within Trello
Reflection
This project reinforced an important belief:
AI is most powerful when it helps people get started—not when it replaces thinking, but when it removes hesitation.
Seeing how people adapt and personalize the generated boards has been especially rewarding, and I’m excited to see how this foundation evolves inside Trello over time.
A fun bonus: I also created a short launch video to bring the experience to life visually.
